2006 West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix

Racing action at the 2006 West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix was a record breaking day--in more ways than one! Temperatures soared to the highest mark in 104 years, making the misting station one of the most popular spots for Edmonton's enthusiastic crowd.

Drivers describe the Edmonton 1.973 mile temporary street course as an awesome track, with a lot of extremely fast flowing corners. The Edmonton track suited Justin Wilson, who took his first win of the Champ Car 2006 World series, and third Champ Car career win.

Cristiano da Matta crashed in corner one (picture above) of the first lap of the West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix, taking his car out of the West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix Champ car race. Da Matta, currently driving for Team RuSport, had his best Champ car season in 2002, when he won the champ car championship with 7 wins and 13 top ten finishes. Two weeks after the Edmonton race, Da Matta suffered a head injury during practice at the Road America event in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, that put him into intensive care. The freak accident occured when a deer ran out onto the track in front of da Matta.

The Edmonton Grand Prix also featured Cascar racing action and Champ Car Atlantic racing. In Edmonton, Jeff Lapcevich from Ontario took first in the 38-car field Cascar final and never looked back.

Simon Pagenaud's Champ Car Atlantic top lap speed of 1:05.935 topped the 1:07.628 set in Edmonton at the 2005 West Edmonton Mall event, by Atlantic Champ Charles Zwolsman. French-born Pagenaud, who races with Team Australia, took the Champ Car Atlantic win in 2006.
