Daytona Beach: Speed & Sun
by: Linda Aksomitis

| Daytona Beach has the Daytona 500 and a beach -- right?
Of course! But there's so much more to discover when you travel to Daytona, from motorcycle events like
Biketoberfest, to the Jackie Robinson Ball Park, to the LPGA and outstanding golf
courses. And, if that isn't enough, there's the underlying thrill of competition that
permeates Daytona, right down to
Racing's North Turn restaurant
where you can ignite your appetite, or the
Cruisin' Cafe bar and grill. [picture to the right]

It's a safe bet you'll want to begin your holiday at
Daytona USA, on of Daytona's main attractions. With its hands-on
activities and informational displays, it may take days! For me, the biggest thrill
was Acceleration Alley, where I drove my race car to finish ahead of everyone in
my group. I still
have my print-out of Race #37
on the computer replica of Daytona's famous track,
with complete detailed results of my drive. From a
starting lap time of 86.867 [now that's bad--but see how you do!], to a finish lap time
of 52.922 with a top speed of 179.8, I was pretty thrilled with the experience. An ex-oval
snowmobile racer, I loved the corners, but didn't care a lot for the feel my car was
trying to dance down the straight-aways! Of course, with today's technology, you feel
like you've really been there--from the motion of your full-size replica race car to the
way the wall fills your view through the windshield when the car gets a little squirmy.
|
| Then you'll have
to take the track tour and see just how steep a 31 degree bank really is!
Daytona International Speedway
is a thrill, even if you're between events, like I was. While I've been on quite
a few race tracks, I'd call Daytona the King!
The 2003 Daytona 500 Speedweeks begin on Feb 1, and run through until Feb. 16, with
the 45th running of the Daytona 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Race. The Pepsi 400
runs on Saturday, July 5, 2003. For tickets, call 386*253*RACE

If your motor sport of preference is motorcyles, then Bike Week
at the Daytona Raceway is something you won't want to miss.
The 62nd
Bike Week of racing runs from Feb. 28 to Mar. 9, 2003. Daytona is home to all of the biggest
motorcycle dealerships, including
Daytona Harley Davidson. And while you're renting your Harley to explore Daytona, I'd highly
recommend a meal at the
Daytona Diner,
that's both delicious and budget conscious [plus, you'll love the decor!].
But, if you prefer to ride your own motorcycle into Daytona, you'll likely want to
plan to attend the Biketoberfest Rally, which is from October 16-19 in 2003.
|
| With Daytona's
Speed Park,
everybody can feel the thrill of competition. Everyone who rides the Nitro Alley
between Feb. 10 and 15, will have their time added to the qualifying board.
Experience the ultimate as you accelerate from 0 to 75 mph in under 3 seconds
with this simulation! [This one
wasn't for me -- too many great meals to risk it!]
Daytona also has
Go-Kart City, with its race replica stock car-like go-karts. Or, try the Atlantic
Race Park, racing single or double go-karts in hairpin turns.

Or, you can try out one of numerous other sports in Daytona!
Great fishing from Sun Glow Pier

Dolphin Watching -- try catching one on camera, now that's a challenge!

Surfing and swimming

Cheer on the Daytona Cubs at Jackie Robinson Ball Park

Try Miniature golf with the kids -- or take your clubs and
try out
Daytona's championship golf courses. Daytona is home of the
LPGA, and even
provides a teaching academy.

As you can see, there's lots to occupy sports enthusiasts in
Daytona Beach. If you're looking for a great place to stay, I recommend the
spacious suites at Ocean Walk Resort
right on beautiful Daytona Beach, or its nearest neighbor,
Adam's Mark, for deluxe, fully-equipped rooms, and
fabulous dining!
